It’s not uncommon these days to know someone within your family or circle of friends to have suffered from cancer, I know I have.

Whilst the experts argue amongst themselves about the causes of such a life-threatening disease, we receive daily health advice from many sources about what we can do to protect ourselves in some small way.

Lifestyle choices I believe have a part to play, some of it quite simple, straightforward and obvious, for example the often quoted advice of not smoking and eating sensibly and healthily. Within that category we should also include what we drink and if you’re a tea drinker you may or may not be aware of some of the health benefits of drinking tea, especially green tea.

This article will take a quick look at some of these supposed benefits and their origins. For example, many scientific studies from all corners of the world have mentioned tea’s antioxidant properties. Without going into long-winded explanations, these antioxidants help our bodies fight and repair the damage caused by otherwise normal bodily functions that happen on a molecular level within us all.

Well, I for one have been a tea drinker for a long time and like a nice, strong cup of tea with milk and happy to drink several cups a day. So I was a bit perplexed to hear that green tea is a better bet. One has to delve a little deeper to understand the different teas that are available and their individual qualities, and how the tea is grown, treated and prepare also plays a part. One particular antioxidant ingredient that’s found in higher levels in green tea is catechins. There have been some findings that show this ingredient affecting the growth and development of cancer cells.

One other interesting fact I also uncovered is that there are good, quality nutritional supplements that contain green tea within their ingredients list, so there’s no need to buy loose tea or tea bags in order to get the health benefits. The research and debate around green tea and cancer will roll-on for some time yet as it’s such a complex subject. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait too long.

Tea drinkers will be happy to learn that they just might be protecting themselves against the risks of developing stomach and intestinal cancers.

It appears that green tea can help fight gastrointestinal carcinogenesis. This is the process by which normal cells in the gastrointestinal tract can be transformed into cancer cells.

Green tea has been found to contain high levels of antioxidants which are considered very beneficial in the fight against cancer. Antioxidants are compounds that can oxidize very easily, or in other words sacrifice one of their molecules to carcinogens, which are compounds looking to steal molecules from normal, healthy cells.

Carcinogens, or free radicals, in the body are considered cancer causing agents because they damage the body’s cells by stealing molecules. This can cause the cells to grow out of control, thus developing into cancer cells.

Green tea is thought to be extremely beneficial because the tea leaves are fresh and unfermented, thus preserving the antioxidants, called catechins, present in the leaves. The tea leaves come from the plant Camellia sinensis, which is the same plant that black tea comes from. The difference lies in how the leaves are treated. . T

he black tea leaves undergo the oxidation process, which oxidizes much of the specific antioxidants that are present in the green tea leaves. Of course, black teas have been found to contain many beneficial and unique antioxidants of their own, but do not contain the same amount of antioxidants as green tea.

These catechins found in green tea are considered better and stronger antioxidants than those found in black tea because they are water soluble and oxidize very easily, giving them a better chance of neutralizing free radicals before they have that chance to damage the body’s cells.

There are currently 30 epidemiological studies of green tea’s use in the prevention of cancer. However, there are very few studies on the treatment of preexisting cancers with green tea. A majority of the studies on green tea deal with whether the antioxidants present in the tea leaves help prevent gastrointestinal cancers.

One particular study on laboratory rats showed that 93.8% of a group of rats fed the extracted catechins from green tea survived after exposure to a strong mammary carcinogen (DMBA). This is compared to only 33.3% of the control group of rats not fed the protective catechins.

In another study was conducted on 1004 Chinese men: 190 of who had gastric cancer, 42 of whom had esophageal cancer, and 772 of whom were cancer free.

These men were studied over the course of 4 to 12 years. Those participants who were known to drink green tea on a regular basis showed a 50% lower risk of developing gastric and esophageal cancers.

This is a significant difference. It basically means that 50% fewer participants in the tea drinker’s group developed cancer than of those in the group found not to drink tea on a regular basis.

There are a total of about eight studies that show drinking green tea on a regular basis can reduce the risk of stomach cancer. It’s possible that green tea is also more effective in the prevention of esophageal and stomach cancers because it moves through the intestinal tract and is in direct, prolonged contact with those tissues.

Many researchers are saying that it is still too early to state conclusively that green tea can help to protect its drinkers from developing gastrointestinal cancers or even help fight the cancer that has all ready developed.

However, the current clinical studies look promising. Many tea drinkers claim the possible benefits of drinking green tea outweigh any small inconveniences.

Green tea has been used for hundreds of thousands of years in China and Japan. In fact, the numbers indicating the risks of developing gastrointestinal cancers in those two countries are among the lowest in the world

Not all green teas are the same. There is a wide variance among green teas concerning freshness, consistency, and concentration of the antioxidants in the teas. Information about the concentration of the antioxidants can sometimes be found on the packaging.

It is best to find your preferred brand of green tea and stick to it, drinking the tea habitually.

Although green tea drink has been around for many centuries most especially in Asian countries, modern studies and modern researches have only recently shown that there are many health benefits to be had in drinking green tea. With the benefits turning up one after another from these researches, it is even quite surprising to think about the many health benefits man has done without from not having maximized the drink.

What are these health benefits that green tea boasts of? Here is a short rundown:

a.	Anti-Oxidant – Green tea leaves contain anti-oxidants. These anti-oxidants help strengthen the circulatory system, preventing certain heart conditions such as atherosclerosis which causes heart attacks, heart failures, and other coronary artery and heart diseases.

b.	Blood Sugar – Green tea controls the level of blood sugar in the system, prevents Type 1 Diabetes and slows down the condition once it has developed in the body.

c.	Cholesterol – Green tea lowers bad cholesterol and increases the good cholesterol or the HDL. Consequently, green tea also prevents strokes.

d.	Cancer – Green tea prevents cancer by de-activating carcinogenic activities which stimulates cancer cells in the body. Green tea, when taken in regularly by cancer patients, has also shown to aid in the relieving the pain that comes along with cancer, making cancer patients more able to cope with the physical pain and symptoms of the illness.

e.	Liver Diseases – Green tea detoxifies the system and rids the body of toxic substances which causes liver cancers and other liver diseases.

f.	Organ Transplant – In a recent study on organ transplant patients, green tea has shown remarkable results in preparing the system for organ transplants, making the body more adaptable to the new changes in the system.

g.	Weight Loss – Green tea speeds up the metabolism in the body and promotes thermogenesis or the production of the body’s heat which is important in the burning of fats in the body. Thus, green tea, when coupled with the right exercise program, is ideal for those who want to lose weight safely.

h.	Osteoporosis – Green tea contains bone-enhancing properties which slows down bone degeneration and prevents Osteoporosis.

i.	Periodontal Diseases – Green tea also helps prevent certain gum problems such as Periodontal Diseases.

These above-mentioned are only some of the more pronounced benefits of drinking green tea. Who knows what other benefits are there left for us to discover? Green tea has certainly gained much ground as far as health benefits are concerned.

There are numerous types of teas available all over the world. However, one of the most popular types is the green tea. This ubiquitous beverage in Japan comes from the Camellia sinesis leaves. Actually other popular teas, such as black and oolong, are also derived from the same plant. However, the difference among these three varieties lies on the processing. In order to get green tea, the leaves of Camellia sinesis are steamed before drying.

Why Is Green Tea So Popular?

As mentioned earlier, green tea has already been a staple in Japanese diet for quite a long time. The positive results of several studies on the benefits of green tea have propelled it to popularity in the West and the rest of the world. According to results of a research published in the Journal of National Cancer Institute in 1994, regular consumption of green tea helps in lowering the risk of esophageal cancer. Aside from cancer, some experts also found that certain substances found in the beverage aid in reducing overall cholesterol levels, while improving the ratio of the good versus bad cholesterol.

Experts believe that the catechin polyphenols are the ones that make green tea potent in soothing many illnesses and improving one’s overall health. One component, epigallocatechin gallate, is known to be a one-of-a-kind antioxidant that is responsible for preventing the growth of cancer cells, without harming the surrounding healthy tissues. This substance, which is known as EGCG for short, is also helpful in inhibiting blood clotting, which is the number one cause for strokes and heart attacks.

Even if black and oolong tea come from the same Camellia sinesis plant, green tea is considered healthier because ECGC is not oxidized in the process of steaming the leaves. Thus, the potency of ECGC is maintained. In contrast, the leaves of Camellia sinesis are fermented to make oolong and black teas. As a result, ECGC components of the plant are changed to other substances which are not as powerful in beating many diseases.

Benefits Of Green Tea

Aside from lowering the risks of developing certain cancers, green tea is also known to help stop the progressive cancer growths, according to the findings of the research done in the University of Purdue.

Scientists also found out that regular consumption of green tea has a substantial effect in a person’s blood pressure. It seems that substances in the beverage can suppress angiotensin II, which is believed to bring about high blood pressure.

The immune system also benefits from regular dose of green tea. Since this drink is rich in flavonoids and polyphenols, it can boost the immune system. It is a known fact that you need to have strong immune response in order to fight infections and a variety of other diseases.

A study headed by Dr Tariq Haqqi from Ohio’s Case Western Reserve University found that the polyphenols in green tea are helpful in preventing rheumatoid arthritis as well. Clinical tests showed that laboratory animals that were regularly given green tea polyphenols did not develop joint diseases.

But one of the top reasons why people from all corners of the world are clamoring for green tea -whether in tablet or concentrate form – is the finding that it can help boost weight loss. Research done by Japanese scientists found that green tea could help a person lose weight even without dieting or exercising. They have found that green tea increases thermogenesis, or the conversion of stored fat into energy. At the same time, components in green tea also speed up metabolism.
