It’s been a busy post-Thanksgiving news week for greentech so far, but here are a few stories that are worth adding to the pile. First off, General Electric’s new smart-grid-as-a-service offering landed its second client Monday, when the Leesburg, Fla. city council approved a $ 20 million deal for GE to install and operate a smart grid for its municipal utility.

The project, partly funded by a $ 10 million Department of Energy grant, is expected to save about $ 15 million in power costs over the next 20 years. The first step — installing smart meters at each customer’s home — will start in March.

GE is relying on lots of smaller utilities signing up for its smart grid service, which it launched in November with Norcross, Ga.’s city utility. The idea is to centralize back-end IT and project management, give utilities a list of products and functions they’d like to buy, and then charge them by the month for doing it.

That’s a marked contrast from the multimillion-dollar, project-by-project style the smart grid has taken so far. Big utilities actually have an incentive to install and own their own smart grid gear, since they get to include capital expenses in rate increases. But GE is betting that thousands of smaller, more cash-constrained U.S. utilities would prefer a services approach.

It isn’t alone in this supposition. Smart grid as a service may well be the buzzword of 2012. Contenders to the title include SAIC's smart metering service offering, IBM’s smarter cities platform and Lockheed Martin’s demand response platform for electric co-ops. It may take awhile for the economies-of-scale business model to build up steam, however. Utilities flush with stimulus cash for the past two years may be tightening their belts.

Even so, utilities’ slow and steady spending on smart grid is a lot more stable than the ups and downs of the renewable energy sector. This week has seen an onslaught of lobbying from solar, wind, geothermal and biomass companies, pleading with Congress not to let the stimulus-era Section 1603 program expire — and warning of a pretty serious downturn for clean energy if it does.

Since 2009, Sect. 1603 has allowed renewable power projects to claim immediate cash grants in lieu of the tax credits that normally fund their development. The recession killed the financial sector’s appetite for tax credits, so turning credits into cash offered a vital lifeline for projects that would otherwise have found few backers. But the Republican shutdown in Congress has dimmed hopes for a renewal of the program, along with those of a host of green bills awaiting consideration.

Sect. 1603 has passed out about $ 9.6 billion in the past two years, but the U.S. Partnership for Renewable Energy Finance reports that losing it could slash energy project financing by 52 percent in 2012. Keeping it, on the other hand, could lead to such wonders as 37,934 new solar jobs and 500 megawatts of new solar power next year, according to the admittedly self-interested Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA).

In other news, Earth2Tech has uncovered a lawsuit pitting home energy efficiency startup Opower against rival Efficiency 2.0 over, of all things, the layout of the paper energy reports both companies send to homeowners.

Arlington, Va.-based Opower, a darling in the emerging field of behavior modification for energy efficiency, says that its New York City-based rival stole Opower’s report format and is using it to gain a competitive advantage. Efficiency 2.0 says it reproduced Opower’s format only as part of a Stanford University-backed study to test it against other styles of customer energy reports in a pilot program, and has no intention of using it with its own customers.

Opower registered its Home Energy Report for copyright in 2009, and places great store on its ability to connect with customers in a way it says the mass of startups in the home energy management space don’t do. Its lawsuit demands that Efficiency 2.0 destroy all the Opower copies it has. Of course, with 19 million reports printed by Opower and delivered to utility customers so far, you’d think anyone who wanted to could find one pretty easily.

Finally, U.S. demand response leader EnerNOC picked up another 40 megawatts of customer load on Tuesday, signing up Pennsylvania utility Duquesne Light. The Boston-based company had just over 7,000 megawatts under management as of Sept. 30, making it the single largest demand response provider in the country. But uncertainty over a conflict on pricing with its key customer, mid-Atlantic grid operator PJM, continues to dog the company.

Well, spring has sprung, and the shops and markets are full with lovely young greens! What better colour to set off spring. Greens are vital for health, providing us with the minerals that our bodies need in order to stay healthy. Many people have a problem when it comes to eating their greens. Some quickly become bored of salads on a daily basis, some dislike the taste, while others simply will not eat anything green!

Here are a few ideas for EATING YOUR GREENS.

Smoothies
Smoothies are a great way to get your daily chlorophyll intake. It is also a perfect way to disguise any taste (if you do not like it) by adding in a piece of sweet fruit. Try apple, kale and ginger, or perhaps spinach and blueberry. Smoothies with greens included are often referred to as ‘Green Smoothies’, they are not always green. Do not be put off by the colour – they taste fantastic!

Because smoothies are blended, the fibres in the green plant leaves are broken down effectively, in turn releasing the nutrients. We humans are pretty lazy at chewing in this day and age, and if we do not chew our food properly then much of the goodness is not able to be taken. Blending your greens into a smoothies is an excellent way to make sure you get the best from those greens.

Ideally your smoothie should be majority ‘greens’ with some fruit just for sweetness. I often make green smoothies with no fruits. It really just depends on personal taste.

Chopped Salads
Greens make a salad. Use varied types of lettuces and herbs such as rocket, with some tomato and beautiful olive oil. The combinations available for delicious salads are endless, especially when you experiment with home made dressings too. Simple, and so good!

A salad accompaniment with a meal is the norm in many countries. Why not embrace this routine and make sure that you serve a side salad with lunch and dinner.

Fillings & Salsas
I like to use the dark leafy greens for this. Add a few leaves into a food processor, along with some other ingredients such as red bell pepper, tomato, olive oil, chilli, and lemon juice. Chop it down using the food processor. This can be eaten as is, alone, or used to fill nori seaweed wraps, wrapped in a green leaf, or used as a dip for raw veggies, crackers and breads.

There are many many ways to EAT YOUR GREENS, I have mentioned only a few, of course there is much room for experimentation – so just have fun!

It’s the dream of every golfer to play like the pros, but very few of us will ever experience such dizzying heights. Which is not to say you can’t play on the same amazing surfaces the pros play on. Southwest Greens Hawaii is proud to be the choice for over 26 PGA tour professionals’ own backyard greens. The Hawaii golf greens you enjoy on courses can just as easily become the Hawaii backyard putting greens of your dreams. Play it how the pros play it, and do it in your own backyard.

Thinking of adding a putting green to your residence or even to your business? Greens made from Hawaii artificial turf and Hawaii synthetic grass are our calling card. In doing your due diligence, look for the types of Hawaii putting greens similar to what you play on at your favorite course. That is why the pros have chosen Southwest Greens as their green of choice. The list includes names like Vijay Singh, Hale Irwin and Sergio Garcia, to name just a few. Need a few more names? How about Mark Calcavecchia, Corey Pavin and Jesper Parnevik? In fact, over 25 PGA professionals in all entrust the time they spend on their short game to a Southwest Greens putting surface. In the ultra-competitive world of professional golf there is no greater endorsement.

Spend any time on a Southwest Greens putting surface and you’ll soon see why the pros are so enamored. You’ll immediately discover a unique and realistic putting surface that offers a true roll every time. Your game will benefit immediately, if for no other reason than the convenience of having a putting green in your own backyard on a surface custom designed especially for you. And remember, our backyard golf greens and synthetic grass don’t need to be watered, mowed, or fertilized. That’s time and money in your pocket, and a bank account that goes up even as your scores go down.

So you’re not going to make the PGA tour. Once you make it through the five stages of acceptance, do the next best thing and play on the surface the pros swear by. Make your backyard ground zero for a wicked short game, with a putting green courtesy of Southwest Greens Hawaii.

The importance of green vegetables has been known for the last few hundred years. Plants have always accommodated a dinner plate and fruits were only used as a snack or dessert. People harvested only the most useful plants and scattered their seeds effortlessly thought out the land we now live on. But it was not until the 16 th century that the fruits and vegetables we now eat were introduced into our diet.

Greens provide essential base forming minerals such as calcium and magnesium that are not found in fruit, nuts and seeds, not to mention other more conventional, acid-forming foods. Most of the fruits available to us are very low in calcium. Although we hear oranges and figs are rich in calcium, we do not eat or digest the white pith or seeds.

Foods from the “Green” groups are among the best for our health. They typically have a high concentrate of two phytochemicals; chlorophyll and carotenoids. These two have been linked to be a prophylactic to tumors and offer protection to coronary disease.

When discussing the importance of “Greens” in our diet, I feel it is important to quickly explain how plant nutrients work. The green color of the leaves is due to the most common of plant pigments, chlorophyll. Chlorophyll acts very similar to blood, only it has an atom of magnesium in the center and a tail of hydrocarbons instead of iron. Thus making this molecule soluble only in fats.

Chlorophyll absorbs violet and red light, appearing to be green. What makes a whole plant green is the absorption capacity which is strong enough to hide the other natural colors in plants. The only time we see the other colors is in Autumn, when the chlorophyll molecule decomposes and we see colors of amber, red, and brown.

The nutrition we get out of a plant depends on the environment on which they are grown. The temperature, humidity, sunlight hours and soil properties are the difference between a healthy plant and one that will not create the nutrients we need.

Green leaf vegetables are our best source of folates and folic acid which is a B vitamin that is essential for cell growth and reproduction . The amount of vitamin C, is a powerful antioxidant is extremely high in leafy greens, especially spinach, kiwi, broccoli and parsley.

Other valuable components are carotenoids, highly unsaturated yellow to red pigments occurring in plants which are components of vitamin A. Vitamin A supports the immune system and also fulfils a specific role in our vision. Potassium, calcium, iron and zinc are also present in great quantities, as is magnesium.

The intake of all of these is essential for human health. Green foods should be cut as little as possible before washing and cooking them to preserve these essential minerals.

Now that we know we need to have those nutrients to live a healthier life, it has become a problem of discipline for people. Not everyone wants to cook up a bunch of fresh greens or throw them into a blender to make a high nutrient, sometimes awful tasting smoothie. While most people consider a salad before or during a meal to be essential, it is clearly not enough to give you everything you need. Vegetables vary in the richness of their nutrients. Some of the vegetables we can consume great amounts of calcium usually not found on a dinner plate or in our average homemade salads are cabbage, collared greens, kale, escarole, turnip greens, mustard greens, watercress and spinach.

Many scientists and doctors have taken this into consideration. There are almost too many types of supplemental “Greens” products available. The most common ways to have ALL of your green minerals is to take it in a pill form or a powder mix that can be turned into a pleasant tasting nutrition drink. These supplements can actually work better than eating the vegetables. Each green has its characteristics and potency but most people do not chew the food enough to release the proper amount into our body. If we eat a vegetable without chewing out the nutrients, it makes it almost impossible for the digestive system to break it down, resulting in a loss of perfect calcium. When supplements for greens are made, they are made up of a blend of the strongest greens and at their most nutritional stage.

What Every Golfer Should Know About Home Putting Greens

How do you say goodbye to 3 and 4 putts? Practice, practice,
practice. The key to improving your short game lies in putting
practice. But where?

You can practice conveniently on your own home putting green and
it may even increase the value of your home. If you’re thinking
about installing a putting green, there are several factors to
take into consideration.

Will your putting green be portable?

Roll out greens come in many sizes. Popular sizes are 2′ x 6′,
3′ x 12′ to 6′ x 15′. Some feature a regulation cup, while
others have a smaller cup than regulation size, which will hone
your targetting. Some feature a ball return.

Will you install your green inside or outside?

Indoors, there are small practice greens, rollout greens and
larger indoor greens. Large indoor greens can be as large as 12′
x 30′. Outdoor greens can be as large as you want.

How much do you want to spend?

Roll-out greens can be found in a wide range of prices from $20
to $300. Larger indoor greens can cost as much as $700. When you
start looking at outdoor putting greens, you are talking about
costs per square foot for all of the materials – the green
material and the base layers.

What material will your green be made of?

Indoor greens are synthetic of course. When you’re considering
outdoor putting greens, you have a choice of materials. Your
choice is natural grass or an artificial turf.

At first glance, you may think all-natural grass might be best.
Think again though. If you choose grass, you will need to spend
time maintaining the green. The question is, would you rather be
mowing, watering, feeding and weeding OR putting? Since most
golfers choose putting, let’s talk about artificial greens.

Artificial outdoor putting greens

With an artificial putting green, maintenance is minimal which
means more time to putt. The synthetic fibers are manufactured
to resist fading and matting.

There are two popular UV-treated materials: polypropylene turf
and nylon turf. Nylon turf is easier to maintain than
polyropylene turf. The fibers spring back so your ball has a
true roll to the cup. Nylon turf is also denser than
polypropylene turf.

Polypropylene turf needs sand fill to keep the fibers upright.
During installation, sand is spread across the top of the
polypropylene surface and brushed into the turf with a broom.
Since the sand can wear away, from time to time, you’ll need to
add more sand.

Outdoor putting greens also require a base of stone or concrete.
The cups are concreted into place. As for drainage, synthetic
turfs drain off the turf, not through it. Drainage needs to be
provided.

How fast will your outdoor green be?

Another decision you’ll make is regarding green speed. Stimp
measures how fast the green is. You can have your green speed
matched to your local courses or to a championship course. In
general, adding more sand to your synthetic green makes it
faster.

Will you Do-it-Yourself?

You can buy a putting green kit to install yourself. Many come
with video instructions. Depending on the size and design, you
may need help in installing the green.

Once your new putting green is installed, you can enjoy hours of
putting practice and improve your golf game. For a putting green

The benefits of installing artificial green grass setups on your commercial property can be summarized very easily:

(a) Comfort: the comfort that the artificial green grass is definitely comparable to the comfort provided by actual green grass. The only real difference is that with the artificial green grass, you get an extra rubber fitting just below the greens that will actually provide your feet an incomparable comfort level should you ever decide to walk through your garden, across your finely trimmed lawn, without any footwear. The bouncy soft undersurface also comes in handy when you have rambunctious children (or even a couple of rambunctious adults on NFL Sunday) to worry about – you can rest assured that anyone who falls on the grass will have a soft and safe landing. And yes, this extends to commercial use at theme parks and sports facilities.

(b) Safety: a benefit unto itself. The right choice for an aesthetic garden also provides the best safety measures for use on commercial properties, including theme parks and sports facilities. This is especially realized when you have large numbers of people utilizing a given space, as the rubber top of the artificial green grass is relatively easy to keep clean and you can virtually assure that people are not be injured as a result of a fall on the grass.
(c) Relaxation: the rich green coloration of the artificial green grass provides a cool soothing feel to the eyes that actually helps to relax the mind. Surrounding yourself with a fresh green lawn is actually a proven way of relieving stress and improving your moods.

Once upon a time, the only individuals and businesses who could afford to have fresh green lawns were those who had the money to pay for gardeners and professional landscape designers. Once upon a time, the upkeep of robust green grass really did demand massive amounts of time, effort, and money.
To be able to manage a real grass lawn properly, you need a substantial water supply and the means to trim it and weed the entire surface of the grass on a regular basis. During the summer and winter, you are also faced with environmental or weather related challenges (summer sun can dry out grass and the winter weather can damage its development, undermining its appearance).

Not anymore though.
The development of artificial grass has provided homeowners and grounds managers with the means of enjoying green grass without the hassle of having to trim and water it on a regular basis.
